World Down Syndrome Day

MARCH 20, 2025—World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD), held on March 21st every year, is a global awareness day that has been officially observed by the United Nations since 2012. The date for WDSD of the 21st day of the 3rd month was selected to signify the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which causes Down syndrome.

This year’s theme is “Improve Our Support Systems,” emphasizing the need for tailored support that empowers individuals with Down syndrome and their families, focusing on choice, control and dignity. People with Down syndrome and intellectual disabilities encounter stereotypes every day and are often underestimated, excluded, treated poorly and even abused.

Rise Against Racism

MARCH 19, 2025—March 21st is the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. This day commemorates the Sharpeville Massacre that occurred in South Africa on March 21, 1960, when 69 people were killed by police at a peaceful protest against apartheid. It is a day observed all around the world to focus attention on the issues of racism (personal and systemic), oppression, bias, white privilege, colonization, racial inequity/injustice, and truth and reconciliation. Canada was one of the first countries to support the UN initiative and launched its first annual campaign against racial discrimination in 1989.
