Learning About Truth and Reconciliation

OCTOBER 27, 2021 -- Raelynn Smith’s Grades 7/8 class at Lakeview School has focused on learning more about truth and reconciliation over the past number of weeks in their classroom. They have worked in groups to demonstrate their learning and have created orange T-shirts out of paper to share the information with others in the school.

The students learned truths about residential schools in Canada. They learned about the discriminatory Indian Act that is still in place today. They examined copies of historical documents to learn about the pass and permit system and then read an article about farming policies meant to repress Indigenous farmers. Students also researched current social issues and injustices that plague Indigenous people today.

Students Visit RIIS Cemetery

OCTOBER 27, 2021 -- On Wednesday, September 22nd and Thursday, September 23rd, the Grades 7/8 classes at Coronation Park Community School had the honour to visit the Regina Indian Industrial School (RIIS) cemetery off of Pinkie Road. Accompanied by Bill Wall from the RIIS Commemorative Association, students learned about the hardships and history during this important part of Canada’s past.

Thom Students Reflect on Reconciliation

OCTOBER 26, 2021 -- On Tuesday, October 5th, students in Thom Collegiate’s Grades 10 and 11 Indigenous Studies classes embarked on a journey for reconciliation.

Thom teachers, Elder Frank Caldwell, Indigenous Advocates Krista Sherman and Luke Blondeau, and the students travelled to Standing Buffalo First Nation, the Fort Qu’Appelle Treaty Four Education and Governance Centre and to the site of the former Lebret Residential School to engage in land-based learning and to reflect upon the personal implications of truth and reconciliation.

McLurg Thanks Frontline Workers

OCTOBER 25, 2021 -- The School Activity Council (SAC) at McLurg School planned a Frontline Worker Appreciation Day on Friday, October 8th. Students and staff were asked to dress as a frontline worker to celebrate and honour everything that these workers do for our community and the essential role they have played during the global pandemic. Students and staff dressed as nurses, doctors, paramedics, firefighters, RCMP, dentists and teachers.
