Louis Riel Day

NOVEMBER 15, 2024—Louis Riel Day is held every year on November 16th, marking the anniversary of Riel’s execution in 1885 in Regina.

Riel, the first president of the Métis Nation, led Métis people in the Red River Resistance and the Northwest Resistance but was captured following the siege of Batoche and put on trial for treason against Canada.

Riel’s legacy includes fighting for Métis people’s rights and identity, negotiating Manitoba into Confederation, as well as protection for minority language rights. November 16th honours the life and legacy of Louis Riel, celebrates Métis culture and traditions, and recognizes the contributions of Métis people to Canada.

Help Students Keep Warm This Winter!

To help keep students warm and safe, several Regina Public schools will be collecting new or gently used children's outdoor clothing, including clean winter coats, snowsuits/snow pants, sweatshirts, toques, scarves, mitts and new socks. The school division is also collecting clothing for students in need.

If you or your organization have items that you wish to donate, please drop them off at the locations listed below.

Transgender Awareness Week and Day of Remembrance

NOVEMBER 12, 2024 — Transgender Awareness Week is observed nationally and internationally every year from November 13th to 19th, leading up to the Transgender Day of Remembrance on November 20th—a day to memorialize victims of transphobic violence. Transgender Day of Remembrance was first observed in 1998 by transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith who hosted a vigil in memory of Rita Hester, a transgender woman who had been killed that year. The vigil became a commemoration of all the transgender lives lost that year to violence and has since become an annual event.

Severe Weather Reminders

Severe weather is a way of life in Saskatchewan. In Regina, it gets cold in the winter. There are severe weather conditions that include snow, ice, blizzards and wind chill that we have come to expect.

Read this article about what to expect and how to provide feedback.

Going to school is also a way of life for our students and staff, regardless of the weather. Very rarely are Regina Public schools closed during a regular school day...even in a blizzard! School buses and transportation similarly will run in most temperatures.
