APRIL 1, 2019 - On March 19^th, Regina Public Schools hosted the second annual Indigenous Student Forum at Division Office. In attendance were trustees from the Regina Public School Board, members of the Elders’ Advisory Council and eight students from each of our high schools. This year, the Indigenous Advocates from Albert, Kitchener, Seven Stones and Thomson Community Schools were also invited to each bring two Grade 8 students to the event.

Ben Ironstand, a teacher at Thom Collegiate, was the keynote speaker and he talked to the audience about resilience and the ability to overcome barriers by connecting with culture and language. Ben’s keynote message served as a starting point to the discussion about four pre-selected focus questions.

APRIL 1, 2019 - Regina Public Schools was proud to welcome Christian Parrish Takes the Gun, known professionally as Supaman, for three days of performances from March 18^th to 20^th to students and the Regina community! While in the city, Supaman performed for students from Albert, Connaught, Kitchener, Jack MacKenzie, Seven Stones, Wascana Plains, Balfour and Scott, and he shared his message of overcoming hardship and loss and about becoming a positive role model.

The 22^nd annual Playground Conflict Managers’ Conference was held on Tuesday, January 29^th at Balfour Collegiate with the theme of “Working Together.” The conference brought together approximately 350 Grades 5-7 students from various Regina Public elementary schools to hone their skills and to celebrate the important work they do on our playgrounds.

Rochelle Rugg, Vice-Principal at École Massey School, was the emcee for the conference and introduced Director Greg Enion, who brought greetings on behalf of Regina Public Schools and thanked the students for being great role models for their peers.

Thanks to parents, students, and staff we are always learning!

Regina Public Schools has had to, on several occasions, cancel all student transportation because of dangerous, icy conditions on residential streets. We would like to thank all parents, students, school families and, of course, school staff for working through that inconvenience and interruption to daily routines.

We’ve heard from a number of parents, students, staff and partners about what we have done right and what we could do better. We appreciate and welcome all your comments, observations and suggestions!

A number of things to keep in mind:

The members of the Douglas Park School Grades 5-8 choir, under the direction of Sharon Meredith, Nysa Ochitwa and Danielle Dumelie, have spent the last couple of months preparing for a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

On December 10^th, the students took to the stage at the Conexus Arts Centre to perform in “The Tenors:  Home for the Holidays” Christmas show. The choir members had the opportunity to perform three times on stage with The Tenors, a world-renowned vocal group who have performed for world leaders and the Queen.

Sheldon-Williams Collegiate is well known for supporting inclusion and celebrating diversity. This fall, Sheldon was recognized twice for their unique programs that connect students of various cultures together.

In October, representatives from Sheldon’s Mindful Creative Writing class were invited to a private reception and luncheon with Her Excellency the Right Honourable Julie Payette, Governor General of Canada. During this time, students spoke to Her Honour about how Sheldon’s Mindful Creative Writing class supports students from differing cultures and backgrounds to connect with each other and share their unique perspectives.

On November 22^nd and 30^th, the Regina Public School Division Office was filled with excited students from Grades 5-7 who came to learn about peer mediation and left with the skills to be conflict managers on their school primary playgrounds.

Agribition was a huge success this year with 195 classes and 5,316 students and teachers from Regina Public Schools attending over five days in November.
