New School Announcements

SEPTEMBER 18, 2020 -- On Wednesday, September 16, 2020, Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe announced a new joint-use public and Catholic school in the Harbour Landing community. The announcement, which took place behind the existing Harbour Landing and Regina Catholic St. Kateri Tekakwitha joint-use school was emceed by area MLA Muhammad Fiaz and included Premier Scott Moe and Deputy Premier/Education Minister Gordon Wyant, among other members of the Legislative Assembly. Chairperson Katherine Gagne spoke on behalf of the Regina Board of Education, and Vicky Bonnell, Regina Catholic Board of Education Deputy Chair, also spoke. Representatives of both school division administrations, including Director Greg Enion and Adam Hicks, Vice-Chair and trustee for the area, were also present for the event.

The new joint-use school is to be built in a yet-to-be-determined location in Harbour Landing west. The new joint-use school will cost $40 million and will provide space for 400 Regina Public Schools students and 250 Regina Catholic students.

"The new school will help address the needs of the growing enrolment at Harbour Landing School and the growing population of the Harbour Landing neighbourhood. “Building a second school in the Harbour Landing community is a testament to the growth throughout our city and the need for schools that meet the changing educational needs of our young people,” Regina Board of Education Chairperson Katherine Gagne said. “During this time of significant disruption to the lives of our students, this announcement of a new joint-use school may give hope and stability to our school families and will help us build our city's educational future.”

Argyle School/École St. Pius X

On Friday, September 18, 2020, provincial dignitaries, as well as Mayor Michael Fougere and SSBA President Shawn Davidson, were part of a second announcement. MLA Gene Makowsky introduced Deputy Premier Wyant, who announced the $47 million investment in the Argyle/St. Pius X joint-use school. Chairperson Gagne spoke on behalf of the Regina Board of Education.

The school will be built on the Argyle School site and will replace the existing Argyle School and the nearby Regina Catholic Schools’ École St. Pius X. The current Argyle School will continue to operate until the construction of the new school is complete. The new joint-use school will cost $47 million and will accommodate 400 Regina Public and 400 Regina Catholic students.

Also in attendance at the event were Bob Kowalchuk, Regina Catholic Board Chair, and Adam Hicks, Regina Board of Education Vice-Chair and trustee for the area, as well as representatives of the administrations of both school divisions.

“After a long wait, I know that the Argyle school community will welcome the announcement of a new school building to meet the needs of this vibrant community,” Regina Board of Education Chairperson Katherine Gagne said.  “Working together with the St. Pius school community will create two new school buildings that may help build the heart of this community and promote its students’ changing educational needs.”
