MARCH 18, 2026—March 20th is observed worldwide as the International Day of La Francophonie. It is celebrated annually to promote the French language and honour the cultural and linguistic diversity that makes up the world. The theme for 2026 is “active ta francophine” (activate your francophonie).
Today, with approximately 396 million speakers worldwide, French is the now the fourth most widely spoken language globally. It is the second most studied language in the world, with more than 170 million learners across five continents, and it continues to play a key role in business, education, diplomacy, law, and culture.
