MARCH 18, 2026—World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD), held on March 21st every year, is a global awareness day that has been officially observed by the United Nations since 2012. The date for WDSD of the 21st day of the 3rd month was selected to signify the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which causes Down syndrome.
This year’s theme is “Together Against Loneliness,” highlighting the high risk of social isolation for individuals with intellectual disabilities and focusing on fostering genuine inclusion, meaningful connections, and safe, welcoming communities to overcome stigma and isolation. People with Down syndrome and intellectual disabilities encounter stereotypes every day and are often underestimated, excluded, treated poorly and even abused.
Let us all join together to advocate for the rights, inclusion and wellbeing of those with Down syndrome.
