Speaker Series at Albert Community School

NOVEMBER 29, 2021 -- The “Speaker Series: Growing up Indigenous and Getting an Education” is about bringing Indigenous professionals into Albert Community School via Zoom to talk to students. These Indigenous professionals are in various careers that required some type of post-secondary education.

The goal of the Speaker Series is for students to meet other Indigenous people who are on their own personal educational journey. The speakers have had challenges navigating the education system; yet through it all, they have succeeded. The speakers have “made it” and now can be identified as having “earned privilege” by Western World standards.

As of November 29, 2021, proof of vaccination, or recent negative COVID-19 test, will be required for all who enter a Regina Public Schools building. This requirement does not apply to students.

Métis Awareness Month at Johnson

NOVEMBER 25, 2021 -- F.W. Johnson Collegiate flies the Métis flag for the entirety of November in recognition of Métis Awareness Month.

In the classrooms this month, students continued to further their learning on Métis culture and finger wove their own mini sashes to wear for Louis Riel Day on November 16th. Both staff and students wore mini Métis sashes on their lapels as part of their ongoing acts of reconciliation to honour Louis Riel.

Massey Welcome Sign in Many Languages

NOVEMBER 24, 2021 -- When École Massey staff were looking to make the entrance to the school more welcoming, Vice-Principal Maxine McKenzie-Cox shared some knowledge she received at a conference that focused on inclusion. The speaker stressed the positive impact that seeing one’s own language would have on visitors to any building.

The idea led to a collaboration with Regina Open Door Society, who already had the I’m Glad We’re Neighbours campaign up and running for Regina residents. A quick survey of students asking which languages were spoken at home meant adding other languages (including the ASL sign for “welcome”) to the 10’ by 4’ banner.

Balfour Collegiate Flash Mob

NOVEMBER 4, 2021 -- On September 22, 2021, more than 100 students from Balfour Arts Collective and Balfour Collegiate’s dance and performing arts programs in Regina came together to perform a flash mob. Socially distanced and masked, students in Grades 9 to 12 danced on the school football field to a mix of upbeat and inspiring songs by Canadian artists. They were proud to dedicate this performance to all of the hard-working healthcare workers in Saskatchewan.
