International Holocaust Remembrance Day

JANUARY 27, 2026—The United Nations General Assembly has designated January 27th as International Holocaust Remembrance Day. It marks the anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration camps and the end of the Holocaust that resulted in the murder of at least six million Jews and millions of others during the Second World War. We remember and stand against hate and discrimination.

Family Literacy Day/Week 2026

JANUARY 26, 2026—The Government of Saskatchewan has proclaimed January 27, 2026, as Family Literacy Day and January 25 to 31, 2026, as Family Literacy Week in Saskatchewan. The week provides opportunities for communities, libraries, schools and other organizations to plan events that raise awareness about the importance of family literacy. Parents with literacy skills support children to acquire literacy skills, contributing to strong families and strong communities.

This year's national theme "Make Mealtime Family Learning Time! / Faire du repas un moment d'apprentissage en famille!" celebrates everyday opportunities for literacy, connection and skill-building through shared food experiences.

National Ribbon Skirt Day

January 4th marks Canada's National Ribbon Skirt Day. Parliament declared the official day after being inspired by Isabella Kulak, a member of the Cote First Nation in Saskatchewan, who faced ridicule for wearing a ribbon skirt to her rural school.

Traditionally, ribbon skirts are worn by Indigenous women, girls and gender-diverse individuals during ceremony and special community events. The skirts represent strength, pride and identity for those who wear them and are an important part of Indigenous culture.
